Swedish citizenship language requirement: the 2026 rules
Understand current language evidence for Swedish citizenship and the transition toward dedicated tests through official sources.
For applications under rules effective 6 June 2026, the Migration Agency describes Swedish knowledge requirements and recognised evidence routes for many applicants aged 16–66.
Current stated levels
The Migration Agency currently identifies B1 for reading and listening and A2 for speaking and writing. Accepted evidence can include specified education or tests, and exceptions may apply.
Tests and transition timing
A society test is planned from August 2026. The dedicated Swedish language test is not expected before autumn 2027; transitional evidence routes therefore matter. Verify the exact current list before applying.
A reliable practice method
Work with short native recordings, notice the target feature, retrieve it without looking and use it in a personal sentence. Revisit it after one day and one week. Keep pronunciation, comprehension and production together: recognising a form is not the same as using it under pressure.
How to judge progress
Repeat one realistic task every two weeks and compare recordings or writing. Track intelligibility, accuracy, speed and the amount of support needed. When official requirements are involved, verify current rules with the responsible Swedish authority rather than relying on an app or an undated summary.
